About us

In January 2024, a group of parents met to brainstorm about where our adult children with different abilities could live. Some live with us, others with families, or differently abled adults. Within the past decade, those living in group homes or with families moved at least five times. If our adult children had their own house, they wouldn’t have to move because of changes in the lives of those supporting them. Instead, the supporters would move, not the residents.

Our Mission

Our mission is “to create an enduring and enriching residential community where differently abled adults can thrive.”

This residential community will serve people who live in the Monadnock Region. Most of them when to ConVal and many of them already live in Peterborough. Some of these differently abled adults have lived in enriching residential communities and thrived there. However, none of them had the security of living there for the rest of their lives. We want to make Peterborough their enduring and enriching residential community where they can thrive as we do.

Our Vision

“An inclusive world of acceptance where communities value and respect differently abled adults.”

Peterborough needs to recognize the contributions of adults with different abilities to the community, such as working in businesses, shopping, dining, enjoying arts, and taking part in recreational activities. Our decision to place Our Own House within walking distance of downtown Peterborough enables easy access to town events without reliance on transportation.

Our Model

Board members explored different community models for adults with different abilities in the Upper Valley and the Seacoast. Our findings show the need to find land where we can build or renovate a house, incorporating studio apartments. Every occupant will have a personal unit featuring a kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom. For those who need support, we will include two-bedroom suites. There will be another bedroom for a nighttime manager who will administer medications and respond to emergencies.

To embark on this venture, we need funding from supporters and corporate partners who believe in our mission. We need real estate to build on or a house we can convert into studio apartments with room to expand. Finally, we need staff to manage the building.

About Elizabeth Goodhue

Elizabeth left her teaching career after 24 years and moved to Mexico in 2014. One year later, she moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to work for an e-learning company. During this time, Elizabeth wrote two blogs about her travels (https://tampicoandlisa.travellerspoint.com/ and https://expatriateinkualalumpur.com/). On the weekends, if she was not traveling, backpacking, or hiking, Elizabeth would pick a café in the city where she could write. Her challenge was to find the café using public transportation or walking. This is how her blog thetruthaboutdownsyndrome.com began. When she returned to the states in 2018, she used her blog to complete her book The Truth About Down Syndrome: Lessons Learned from Raising a Son with Trisomy-21.
